Stop Trying and Start Doing

Posted on 28 June 2010 by Kevin Martyn

If you have ever wondered why so many individuals fail in pursuit of their goals and don’t succeed I can tell you that generally it has EVERYTHING to do with their focus and the language which they are using. Let me put this into perspective for you with a little practical example which we can have a little fun with. You can do this anywhere and right now as you read this article.

What I would like you to do is this…

Prepare yourself by taking out of your purse or wallet a bank note of any value and placing it on the table in front of you. If you DON’T HAVE a coin or banknote then literally ANY small object at all will work just fine for this short exercise.

With your object placed on a table or desk in front you, what I would like you to do is now TRY and pick it up!

No, STOP right there…

I didn’t say pick it up, let’s try again! …place it back down again and now TRY to pick it up!

Did you do it again?

Did you actually pick it up? Or have you already realised how TRY is a VERY emotive word which often SABOTAGES you by confessing your subconscious mind. You see, TRY is not an action or result; in fact it is very hard to describe it all.

You either do something or you don’t do it and then you either succeed or you fail, but you ALWAYS get a result which is either positive or negative, to TRY is neither one thing nor the other and this is where the confusion and ambiguity comes in! Even if this is not obvious to you at a conscious level, it makes a HUGE difference to your subconscious mind.

So take a moment to think about it and decide upon what are you focused on? TRYING? Or SUCCEEDING? Hopefully it will ALLWAYS be a POSITVE and successful outcome.

Now I hope that this bit of silliness has been a small AHA moment for you because this small action and understanding could make a HUGE difference in your outcome and ongoing levels of success. In your mind’s eye create a picture and see yourself SUCCESFULLY ACHIEVING your objective rather than yourself just TRYING to do it, have you got the idea? Achieving it and doing it rather than trying to do it.

Now start paying CLOSE attention to the words you use…

Watch your future language VERY carefully.

Just listen to what you say, and then if you catch yourself using the word TRY make a mental note of it so you can ERADICATE it from your vocabulary when used in this context.

Also listen to what other people say and just how often other individuals will say I’ll TRY to do this, or I’ll TRY to do that!

From now on you need to say I WILL DO IT, or, if this doesn’t suit your personality, ‘I will give it my VERY best effort’. Become an ‘I can‘will do‘no problem‘ person, and this one action alone will MASSIVELY contribute to improving your life.  Once you have become aware of the HUGE difference between trying and doing, you will notice just how often other people say they will try rather than do.

Now this is a great opportunity for you, start observing those people who say they will TRY and keep notes on just how often they achieve their objective compared to those individuals who say I WILL and how often they achieve their objective.

When I first became aware of this fact I started monitoring it and I noticed that generally those people who say they will TRY to do something failed …and failed FAR MORE often than the individuals who didn’t use the TRY word!

In my humble opinion TRYING something, rather than just DOING it it’s really preparing you for a failure. Your subconscious mind likes a challenge and to work towards your objectives, and merely TRYING something is not challenging enough.

Please believe me when I tell you that your subconscious mind is ALWAYS listening to your conversation and DOESN’T miss a thing! It doesn’t question what you say, so if you were to tell someone that you were the strongest person in the world, your subconscious will believe you and support you as much as possible in your statement. However, it may be easy to fool, but it does understand that the word TRY means you are not necessarily focusing on achievement.

In conclusion to this very short article, and in my opinion, the only place where a TRY belongs is in a game of rugby! And what really interests me more about the game of rugby is the CONVERSION, a CONVERSION to a sale, or a CONVERSION to a completion of a satisfactory goal.

So stop trying and start doing.

This sounded so much like me until I read this article. So now I have stop trying and started doing. Putting pen to paper and laying out things and actioning them.

    Thanks Kevin.

Thats really great Bruce, sometimes its the smallest changes which generate the BIGGEST results, and this is one of those occasions.

  3. Great article Kevin and so so powerful when people take the time to listen to their chatterbox whispers (inner thoughts and words they use regularly), guess that is wehre the saying – If at first you dont succeed try try and try again comes from – and people think that it is the trying that is important when in reality it is the determination, belief and taking action to DO IT! that is important and powerful not how many times you try to do it…..

Thank you Carol, I recently used this princile on one of the indeviduals who I mentor and a week later they are evolving into a different person.

Reading this I became aware of a part of me that is still ‘trying’ even though I have eliminated this word from my vocabulary and am hot on picking up on it when others use it!

It is the you know something, then you KNOW it, THEN YOU KNOW IT syndrome :)

Awesome isn’t it? Thanks for sharing and inspiring me as to the power of sharing. I have been being stingy, holding back from sharing all that I have come to know – time to share by just writing and stop trying to write!!!

Hi Carolanne, in my opinion there is a time for learning, and then there is a time for sharing and helping others. From your words it seems that you feel you are starting to reach that time. The nice thing about writing is that you only need to start, and then become aware of what you have written and start improving from that point forward.

I like to write EVERYDAY for an hour or so, but be careful because writing is HIGHLY adictive!

    Have fun…
